A Drill for Nightworkers

2018Human Centered Design, Solid + Surface Modelling (SolidWorks), Engineering Drawings, Casing Design, Clay + BlueFoam Prototyping, Digital Sketching + Rendering

A Drill for Nightworkers was developed from idea to working product following a human center design approach. We started with defining an underserved user group, night workers, and iterated through user research, sketching, foam prototyping, testing functional requirements, testing electronics. Ultimately, we created a high fidelity, work like prototype.

Features of our drill included:

  • A novel battery attachment system
  • A circadian light for night time workers
  • A natural material handle
  • A modular component and a self-assembly system

My Role:

In addition to my contributions to the general development process, I was in charge of the design and physical creation of the drill. This involved modeling the entire drill + battery system and then 3D printing the parts. Part of this modeling included designing a completely modular internal casing layout which allowed major drill components to be slotted into the casing by the user.
